Top 5 Ingredients to look out for when selecting a dog food

Buying dog food these days can be a bit of a mine field with so many different brands/ ingredients and conflicting advice!  We want to shed some light on our top 5 ingredients and hopefully highlight some of the key ingredients you should look out for when choosing a dog food.

When reading a dog food label and the ingredient list, it's important to know that the ingredients are listed in order of predominance with the ingredients used in the greatest amount listed first and the smallest amount listed last.  We recommend having a combination of protein and carbohydrates listed as the first  3 ingredients of dog food.

When it comes to selecting the best dog food for your furry friend, there are a number of important ingredients to consider. Here are our top five ingredients to look for when choosing a food for your dog:

1)  Meat: The first ingredient listed on the dog food label should be a high-quality, protein-rich meat source. This can include chicken, turkey, lamb, fish, or duck. It is preferable to have this meat specified, that is, seeing the actual name of the animal from which it came e.g fresh salmon, salmon meal etc. Meat meal is a term used when animal protein has undergone a rendering process where most of the water and fat is removed leaving primarily protein and minerals. This is then ground to form a uniform ‘meal’. Meat meals are a low-fat, concentrated protein source which is very tasty and highly digestible.  This is different to byproduct meal, which can also include other parts of the carcass.

2)   Whole Grains: Whole grains, such as brown rice, oats, and barley, provide important carbohydrates and fiber in your dog's diet, remember that dogs are omnivores! These ingredients help to keep your dog's energy levels steady and promote healthy digestion.

3)  Fruits and Vegetables: Fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, sweet potatoes, and apples, are packed with vitamins and minerals that can help support your dog's overall health. They also provide important antioxidants that can help protect against disease.

4)   Fatty Acids: Foods, such as salmon and flaxseeds, contain high levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids which can help keep your dog's coat shiny, reduce inflammation, and promote overall joint health.

5)   Probiotics and Prebiotics: Probiotics help replenish the good bacteria that lives in the gut and can help support a healthy digestive system. Prebiotics are special foods such as chicory root  and beet pulp that nourish your pet’s naturally occurring gut bacteria. Both of these ingredients help improve your dog's digestion and reduce the risk of gastrointestinal issues.

When selecting a dog food, it's also important to consider your dog's breed, age, life stage, activity level, and any health issues they may have. These factors can affect their nutritional needs, for example, older dogs may require a food that is lower in protein and fat, while active dogs may require a food that is higher in protein and fat.

Ultimately, the best dog food is one that is made with high-quality, natural ingredients, and best suits your dog's needs. By focusing on these top five ingredients, always reading the label and ingredient list carefully and avoiding any dog food that contains artificial preservatives you can be sure that you are providing your furry friend with the nutrients they need to thrive. Here at Buddy Bites we aim to do just that!
